DigiLamon Food Review
Some seafood places in Davao are “okay.” Some are “masarap naman.”
But Cafe Tavera is the kind of place that makes you say, “Ito na ‘yun.”
I’ve tried chili crab in different places, but after this meal, I can confidently say:
Cafe Tavera has the best chili crab I’ve tasted in Davao — by far.
And it wasn’t just the chili crab. The kinilaw was fresh, the tiger prawns were firm with natural sweetness, and the steamed oysters were so good we immediately agreed: “Must-try talaga.”
Cafe Tavera is located at Tavera corner Avanceña Street, Davao City, and is a known seafood and Filipino restaurant with strong reviews on platforms like Tripadvisor.

Old-School Davao Seafood Place That Locals Trust
Cafe Tavera has that classic Davao resto vibe:
- simple and comfortable
- family-style dining
- seafood-focused menu
- a place where locals bring their families and balikbayans
It’s not trying to be trendy, but it doesn’t need to be. The food is the main character.
According to Tripadvisor, it’s a Filipino/Seafood restaurant and is open for lunch, dinner, and brunch.
What We Ate
Here’s what we had — and every single dish delivered:
- Chili Crab
- Kinilaw
- Tiger Prawns (we tried it in sinigang, garlic and butter style)
- Steamed Oysters
1) Chili Crab — The Star of the Night
Rating: 10/10
This is the dish that sealed the deal for me.
The chili crab at Cafe Tavera wasn’t just “spicy.” It was flavorful, rich, and balanced. You get:
- sweet crab meat
- deep, savory sauce
- a chili kick that doesn’t kill the flavor
- that messy-but-worth-it seafood experience
And yes, you WILL need extra tissue. But that’s part of the fun.
This is the kind of dish you order when you want to impress a visitor in Davao or treat yourself to a proper seafood night.
2) Kinilaw — Freshness You Can Taste
Rating: 9.6/10
Kinilaw is one of those dishes that instantly tells you if a seafood place is legit. If the fish isn’t fresh, you’ll know.
Cafe Tavera’s kinilaw tasted:
- clean and fresh
- tangy but not overpowering
- balanced with the right amount of “asim”
- no weird aftertaste
Perfect appetizer, and honestly, it made us even more excited for the rest of the meal.
3) Tiger Prawns — Firm, Sweet, and Super Sulit
Rating: 9.8/10
Their tiger prawns were fresh, firm, and naturally sweet — not rubbery, not overcooked.
And what I love is that they work perfectly in different styles. For us, they were amazing in:
Sinigang Style
- the sour broth + sweet prawns combo = solid
- comforting and filling
- perfect if you want seafood but still “Pinoy ulam” vibes
Garlic and Butter Style
- rich, aromatic, super flavorful
- you’ll want rice immediately
- the prawns stayed juicy (not dry)
If you’re a prawns lover, don’t skip this.
4) Steamed Oysters — MUST TRY
Rating: 9.7/10
Steamed oysters are a simple dish, but when done right, they’re incredible. And Cafe Tavera’s version was:
- fresh and briny (in a good way)
- not fishy
- tender
- perfect with dipping sauce
It’s one of those dishes you order “for tasting” and then you end up wanting more.
Serving & Value: Worth It for Seafood Lovers
Cafe Tavera isn’t the cheapest seafood option, but it’s the kind of place where you feel the value because:
- seafood quality is high
- freshness is obvious
- flavors are consistent
- servings are good for sharing
Based on Tripadvisor, it’s categorized under ₱₱-₱₱₱, which matches the kind of meal we had—more of a “treat” meal than everyday lunch.
Service & Dining Experience
Rating: 9.5/10
Service felt smooth and friendly, and for seafood restos, that matters because:
- timing is important
- seafood has to come out fresh
- staff need to be attentive but not intrusive
Everything felt well-managed, making the whole meal more enjoyable.
Tips Before You Go
If you’re planning to eat at Cafe Tavera, here are practical tips:
- Go with family or friends (best for sharing)
- Bring cash or card (Tripadvisor notes credit card acceptance)
- Order the chili crab early if you’re hungry — it’s the star
- Pair oysters + kinilaw for the best seafood starter combo
- Confirm hours via Cafe Tavera before you go Facebook
Overall Rating: 9.8 / 10
What I Loved
- Best chili crab in Davao (for me, no question)
- Super fresh kinilaw
- Tiger prawns with real sweetness
- Steamed oysters are must-try
- Perfect for seafood lovers and group dining
What to Manage Expectations On
- It’s a seafood place, so expect a slightly higher bill than regular restos
- It’s a classic Davao resto vibe, not a trendy café setup
Final Verdict
If you’re craving a true Davao seafood feast, Cafe Tavera deserves to be on your list. The chili crab alone is worth the visit — but the kinilaw, tiger prawns, and steamed oysters complete the experience.
Cafe Tavera is DigiLamon Approved — seafood feast level. ✔️
