Dining out is rarely about perfection—it’s about the overall experience. A restaurant doesn’t need to get every single dish right to leave a good impression. What matters more is consistency, effort, and whether the good outweighs the misses.

Our experience at Tsuru falls exactly into that category. While there was one dish that didn’t quite work for me, the rest of the meal was strong enough that we left already planning our next visit.

Tsuru is the kind of restaurant where you can feel that care is put into both the food and the service. From the moment we sat down, everything felt smooth and welcoming. Most of what we ordered was excellent, and even the one miss felt more like an exception than the rule—especially considering how good everything else was.

One of the first things worth mentioning is the service. At Tsuru, the staff did a great job making the dining experience comfortable from start to finish. Orders were taken properly, food arrived at a reasonable pace, and we never felt ignored or rushed.

Unexpected Highlight: Vietnamese Brewed Coffee

One pleasant surprise during our visit was the Vietnamese brewed coffee. This wasn’t something I originally went in planning to order, but I’m glad I did.

My friend ordered the seafood udon, and she absolutely loved it. Udon is one of those dishes that’s meant to be comforting—warm, filling, and satisfying without being complicated. Tsuru’s version did exactly that.

The noodles were enjoyable, and the seafood added enough flavor and substance to make it a complete meal. This dish is a great option if you want something safe, comforting, and dependable. Based on how much my friend enjoyed it, it’s something we’d both happily order again.


Sukiyaki: Too Sweet and Overpowering

I ordered the sukiyaki, and this was the one dish that didn’t work for me.

Sukiyaki traditionally has a sweet-savory profile, but in this case, the sauce leaned too heavily on sweetness. The sugar was overpowering to the point where it made tasting anything else nearly impossible. Instead of a balanced dish where flavors complement each other, the sweetness dominated everything.

This was disappointing, especially because sukiyaki is usually a dish I enjoy. That said, given how good the rest of the food was, I’m not convinced this represents Tsuru’s overall quality. It could have been an accidental miss or simply a flavor profile that doesn’t align with my personal preference.

Either way, this is one dish I’ll be avoiding on my next visit.

If there’s one dish that truly stood out, it was the California roll.

It was fantastic—so good that both of us commented on it while eating. That’s always a sign of a well-executed dish: when it naturally becomes a topic of conversation at the table. The roll was balanced, fresh, and enjoyable from start to finish.

If you’re unsure what to order at Tsuru or you’re visiting for the first time, the California roll is an easy recommendation. It’s the kind of dish that leaves a strong, positive impression and makes you confident about returning.

I also attempted to order a mixed drink that wasn’t on the menu, but that wasn’t possible. While some restaurants are flexible with off-menu requests, Tsuru seems to stick strictly to what’s listed.

This isn’t necessarily a negative—many restaurants prefer consistency and quality control. It’s just something to keep in mind if you’re the type who enjoys customizing cocktails. At Tsuru, it’s best to choose directly from their drink menu.

Aside from the sukiyaki, the overall quality of the food at Tsuru was impressive. The seafood udon and California roll showed that the kitchen knows what it’s doing, especially when it comes to balance and execution.

When most dishes on the table are enjoyable, one miss doesn’t define the entire experience. Instead, it becomes a note for future visits—something to adjust when ordering again.


Why Tsuru Is Still Worth Returning To

Despite the sukiyaki not meeting expectations, Tsuru remains a place we’re happy to return to. The reasons are clear:

What I’d Order Next Time

On our next visit, I’d focus more on:

  • sushi and rolls (especially the California roll)
  • noodle dishes like the seafood udon
  • drinks that are already on the menu

And I’d simply skip the sukiyaki. Dining out is often about learning what works for you at a particular restaurant, and Tsuru made that process easy.


Final Verdict: A Restaurant with More Hits Than Misses

Tsuru is a restaurant that delivers more hits than misses. While my sukiyaki didn’t work for me due to its overpowering sweetness, the rest of the experience—from service to standout dishes—was strong enough to outweigh that one issue.

We’ll definitely be back. With so many items on the menu that clearly shine, Tsuru feels like a place where it’s worth exploring more dishes over time. Sometimes, one imperfect order doesn’t take away from a good meal—it just helps you order better the next time.
